died 12 Jan 1986 one day before her 90th birthday. They had 2 children: Helen and Glenn. Helen married Ingvald Erickson. Glenn Marvin  is the 4th generation to live and farm on the Century Farm.

Haga, Martin and Martha (Gronland) and Caroline (Borseth)

Martin and Martha Haga

Martin O. Haga was born 6 Oct 1868 and died 18 Sep 1942. At age 5 he came to live with Ole and Gunhild (Bergerud) Haga who farmed north of Ridgeway, IA. Ole and Gunhild had a daughter Serena who married John K. Hovden. They also made a home for Gunhild’s young sister, Olena, who married Even K. Hovden.

On 26 Mar 1892 Martin married Martha Gronland in Traill Co., ND. Martha was born 26 Mar 1870 in Norway and came to America with her parents Carl and Kristie (Grandalen) Gronland. She died 15 Sep 1907 when their children were very young. They had 5 children: Carl, Anna, Gena, Marie and Ralph.

On 24 Nov 1908 Martin then married Caroline Borseth (b. 19 Dec 1885-d. 25 May 1979) daughter of Erick and Mari (Oison). They farmed until 1920 when they moved to Decorah.

Martin worked for Brickner Feed & Seed and also for Wepler’s Market. After he retired Caroline baked and sold lefse and flat bread. She also gave the children and grandchildren lefse and flat bread every Christmas.

Carl was a carpenter and farmer. He married Ida Bakken. They had 2 children: Helen and Glenn. Helen married Ingvald Erickson. Anna married Hans Engen a farmer. They had one child: Arlene who married Harry Rude. Gena married Lloyd Larson. He hauled cream to Ridgeway with a team of horses and wagon and later with a truck, after which he began farming. They had one child: Francis who married Dorothy Opsahl. Marie was born blind and crippled and died at age 21. Ralph hauled cream to the Decorah Creamery. He married Amanda Thompson. They moved to Salem, OR where he worked at the Blue Lake Cannery for many years.

Hageman, John and Mary (Buchheit)

John Hageman was born in Washington Twp., on 17 Feb 1866, the son of Fredrick & Marie Angela Schrandt Hageman. Mary Buchheit was born 23 Sep 1869, also in Washington Twp., the daughter of Nicholas & Julianna Doclos Buchheit. Mary & John were united in marriage on 21 May 1889, at St. Mary’s Church, Festina. Following their marriage, they established a home on a farm south of Ossian where they farmed for 19 years. Eventually they purchased a farm 2 1/2 miles northeast of Festina. They lived on this farm until their youngest son, John, married and took over the farm. (Eventually the home place was owned by a grandson and now a great-grandson.) John and Mary then moved and retired in Ossian.

They were the parents of fourteen children: Fred, Philip, Nick, Angela, Barbara, Mathilda, Agnes, Mary, Joseph, Victoria, Philomena , John, Julia and one infant son. Fred married Mary Imoehl. They farmed near Fort Atkinson. Philip married Therisa Meyer. They farmed northeast of Festina. Nick married Rosalie Imoehl. They farmed next to the home place. Angela married Frank Imoehl, a neighbor boy. She started farming with her new husband on the Joe and Helena I moehl farmstead. Barbara worked for many years as a housekeeper at St. Francis DeSales Rectory, Ossian. Mathilda, better known as Tillie, married Anthony Bohr. After fifteen years of marriage, Tony died of cancer. Tillie continued to raise their family of seven children and kept the farm going south of Ossian. Agnes stayed at home and cared for her parents. Mary married Clem “Mike” Bohr. They farmed in the Ossian area and today reside in Ossian. Joseph married Irma Moellers. They built a new set of buildings on part of the land from the home place. Victoria married Wilfred Lansing. They farmed in the Ossian area and now reside in Ossian. Philomena married Roman Ott. They lived in Ossian where Roman was a semi-truck driver. John married Bertha Schissel. They farmed the home place. Julia died when three years old and one son died in infancy.

Grandpa John Hageman and Grandma Mary Hageman

John died 11 Jan 1948 and Mary died 2 Oct 1951. They are both buried in the St. Francis DeSales Cemetery in Ossian.
